Even when they're allegedly saving you money, merchants phrase their numbers in a way to trick consumers.
When something is, say, "10% off", what they mean is that it is 90% of the original price. Further discounts are conducted in the same fashion. If you have a $100 item that is 40% off, and then apply a second discount that is 40% off, you don't get the item for $20, but rather the product of $100 • 0.60 • 0.60, which is $36.
